SaMD

Software as a Medical Device: Software intended to be used for medical purposes without being part of a hardware medical device.

Software as a Medical Device includes mobile health apps, AI diagnostic algorithms, and stand-alone analysis software. Regulators evaluate SaMD based on the risk of the clinical decisions it informs or drives. SaMD must comply with software lifecycle standards like IEC 62304 alongside standard QMS and Clinical Evaluation Report requirements.
